How to Use Verbs in Samoan

Video Lesson

Verbs are action words. Run, jump, go, come, sit, and stand are examples of verbs.

*A verb phrase is a verb/main idea or a combination of a verb, adverb, and possibly an helping verb that expresses action.

Examples of verb phrases:

  • go – verb
  • must go– Helping verb and verb
  • go quickly– verb and adverb

Verbs and verb phrases can appear in different parts of a sentence because Samoan sentence structure can be arranged in several different ways yet have the same meaning.

Word key:

  • Sa- Past Tense Marker
  • Ou- Descriptive Pronoun of “I”
  • Alu vave- Go fast, Go quickly
  • o a’u- Emphatic Pronoun of “I”
  • i le falesa- to the church

TRANSLATION: I went quickly to the church.

  • Alu vave (Go quickly) is the verb phrase.
  • “Go quickly “changes to “Went quickly” because of the Past Tense Marker “Sa”.
  • Notice that descriptive pronouns are stated between the tense marker and verb phrase.
  • When emphatic pronouns are used, the tense marker comes right before the verb phrase.

Verbs are words that express action.  Examples are walk, talk, jump, cry, say, and do.

Note:  Verbs in English take different forms to express it’s tense.  For example: Sit, Sat, and Sitting.  In Samoan the tense does not change without tense markers.   We will learn about tense markers in another chapter.

Sit — >             Nofo

Sitting –>      O lo’o nofo

Sat –>             Sa nofo

*note: there are some instances where verbs change to show the totality of an action. This will be covered in another chapter.

*note:  Verbs change to show the plurality of a word.  The chart below shows singular and plural forms of some verbs.
